Frequently Asked Questions

What is wind chill and how is it calculated?
Wind chill is the perceived decrease in air temperature felt by the body due to wind. It is calculated using the National Weather Service formula that factors in air temperature and wind speed to determine the feels-like temperature.
When does the wind chill formula apply?
The NWS wind chill formula is valid when the air temperature is 50°F (10°C) or below and the wind speed is 3 mph (4.8 km/h) or higher. Outside these conditions, the actual temperature is used.
How quickly can frostbite occur in cold wind chill?
Frostbite can occur in as little as 5 minutes when the wind chill drops below -55°F. At wind chills between -18°F and -35°F, frostbite can develop on exposed skin within 10 to 30 minutes.
Is this wind chill calculator free and accurate?
Yes. This calculator uses the official NWS wind chill formula, runs entirely in your browser, and is completely free with no signup required.
